Today is my first day back home from the 2017 Society for Creative Founders Conference, and my mind is still swirling with everything that everyone shared and was learned. I was tremendously blessed to speak on the Core Module at this years conference experience, and I wanted to share a little bit of what I spoke on with all of you. I feel that this dose of encouragement delivered in these loved Note of Grace posts is still so needed by so many, so I hope you will all continue to join me in reading these thoughts that I want to share with you. Today, I am focusing on small business owners ... and hope that these words below inspire you to build a business you absolutely love, while encouraging you to build a life you love as well.
I think we are all here on this Earth to share the precious gifts that we have been given. That if we don’t share them, we are doing a disservice. Somehow, somewhere along the way, something gets placed on our hearts to do something in particular. You may be a seasoned business owner or freshly designing your first steps, but one thing that we all have in common is that for some reason, there’s a gift that we have been given that we just can’t let go of, and we love it so much that we decided to do something substantial with it.
The first time it comes into our mind, we might put it away on a shelf high up in the cobwebs of our daily brain library rotation, but time and time again, it comes back. Louder and louder until we finally can’t let it go, and we know that if we don’t act on it, it will lead to regret. So eventually, we succumb to the persistence of the idea and the next thing we know, our business is born. Whether it started as a hobby or entirely as a business idea from the beginning, we know that when we do this one thing, this one amazing thing that has been blooming inside of our souls for as long as it has, that everything from here forward will be different.
However, in the midst of all of the striving you are doing and the changes you implementing daily to create a life you love, there is something incredibly important to keep at the forefront of all of this too - the kind of a life you want to lead outside of your business.
One of my biggest fears is that a step that I take or a piece that I add - a dream that plants it’s own seed in my heart to do, will consume me and make me not be fully present or in a moment with my family and miss time with them because I’m working on something for my business. So for me, I need to constantly keep myself in check and make sure that I don’t let that fear become a reality - and that I don’t work when I should be playing, don’t work when I should be sleeping, and don’t work when I should be watching TV and relaxing at night.
Because when you are truly passionate and truly love what you do, a lot of times it won’t feel like work. It’ll just feel like an extension of yourself.
So, we need to all ask ourselves these questions as our businesses continue to grow. Do you want to have a business that you are working around the clock, where you can’t give yourself margin or take days off? Or do you want to have a business that fills you up to the brim when you’re in it, but you can close it off and focus on other things when you’re not?
Do you want a business that allows you the freedom to go to your kids school play at 11:00 in the morning, take a personal day or go on a vacation on a Tuesday if you feel the pull to go? If so, what do you need to have in place, what are you going to establish as a core business detail to make that to happen?
Who is in your life, outside of your business, that you want to do this for?
Who is worth all of the hard work that you dedicate yourself for every day?
Who do you want to bless that is perhaps someone that you wouldn’t be able to if you didn’t have this business of yours?
You are not made to have a life that revolves around your business, but rather have a business that revolves around your life.
That is SO important to remember. Take the time to build a life outside of what you are doing here. Dedicate the time to do the work, but give yourself grace and the time to make it happen. Don’t expect all of these things to happen in one day, one week, one month, or even one year. Everything, especially change and confidence within yourself with items you’re working on, takes time. So, think about what is most important when you’re not working … what do you want your life to look like? What truly matters outside of all of this?
In addition to being a business owner, you are someone’s friend, someone’s daughter, perhaps someone’s mom or someone’s wife. You have people in your life who love you and want to spend time with you, and you need to spend quality time in your life with them. Take time to create balance while building your core values, both for your personal life and in your business.
How are you going to create a life that you love, one that your business flows well with it? Take the time to think about what truly matters, and how you're going to build a life at the same time as building your amazing business. Once you start to figure out all of those things and how to mingle them together, you will be well on your way to figuring out how to blend work and life into a strong core to create a business that you love, and your life will thank you for it.
